BROS, when you’re trying to get involved in research, keep in mind that you are not limited to BME labs!  Around the end of the spring semester, we will also host the BME Research Connections Conference, where you’ll get the opportunity to learn and network with research labs to find an undergraduate research position of your own.

How to Get into a Lab


Depth Elective Credit

  • Count up to 6 hours of research for depth elective credit (BMED 2688/4699), provided the research was conducted in the same lab for at least 2 semesters
  • BME-related research conducted in a lab in another school/department will have to have this pre-approved by the Associate Chair for Undergraduate Studies


Breadth Elective Credit – Research Option (15 credit hours for BMEs)

  • Complete at least 9 credit hours of undergraduate research, with at least 6 on the same topic
  • Take the thesis writing courses, LCC 4701 and LCC 4702 (1 credit hour each)
  • Take any other course to satisfy the remaining 4 credit hours
  • Complete a research proposal outlining the research topic and project for the thesis
  • Write an undergraduate thesis/report of research on their findings and complete the Certificate of Research Option Approval form

NOTE: Research credit cannot be used as Depth Elective credit if you have chosen the Research Option to satisfy the Breadth Elective requirement.  For more information, refer to the BME page or UROP!



PURA (President’s Undergraduate Research Awards)

  • $1500 max salary award and $1000 in travel funds
  • 1 salary award per academic year (summer, fall, spring)
  • Audit; Course credit not allowed for same project
  • Faculty mentor and recommendation letter required
  • Deadline for Summer 2014 Salary Awards is February 28th, 2014

Petit Undergraduate Research Scholars Program

  • $5,900 stipend, housing not provided
  • Commitment to the program beginning in January 2014 – December 2014 (12+ hrs/week during Spring and Fall, 40+ hrs/week during Summer)
  • Attend 6 program enrichment workshops throughout the year
  • Participate in end-of-year poster session & reception
  • Official transcript and 2 letters of recommendation required
  • Deadline in September
